28 gennaio Here's a meme for you...I haven't seen it anywhere else, so as far as I'm concerned, I made the following up. Think about your answers to these questions and maybe post them on your blog. It shouldn't take long.
---------------------------------------------------------
Who's affected your life the most...
... In the last 10 years?
... In the last 5 years?
...In the last year?
...All time?
You're allowed to put more than one person per section, and one person might occupy more than one section, but try and have a definitive reason for why they're there at all. Are you still close to them? If not, why not?
----------------------------------------------------------
Maybe one day I'll post my answers. 21 gennaio A worthy cause...Another one of the Microsoft presenters, Mike Ormond, is training for the 2007 London Marathon and is trying to raise £1000 for charity. Visit Mike's Blog now and donate something. Things to blog about...I'm back from Redmond Reading after a brilliant couple of days at Microsoft. There's lots I want/need to blog about, but it's gone 2am and I'm really quite tired so I'll just give a brief list that I'll expand upon later.
First of all, a big shout out to Ian Moulster and the crew who organised the whole thing - thanks and I'm waiting for the next version of Windows (Vienna) to be launched just so I can do this all again.
I'd also like to give special mention to Mike Taulty, who come under the heading of "If Carlsberg made Presenters..." - this guy's presentation skills are to be looked upon in awe.
Next - a thankyou to Zi Makki who organised the Geek Dinner after the first day's events. I certainly enjoyed meeting the guys from the Next Gen Users Group (subscribe to the Podcast) and I think Dave and Richard have managed to persuade me to sign up for WebDD (Web Developer Day), which of course has another Geek Dinner arranged by Zi following it.
Anyone I've forgotten, I'm sorry - it's late and I'm really quite tired. I'll expand upon what the last couple of days have been about at some point tomorrow/Monday and in the meantime I've put up the photos I took in Reading on Spaces (link for those reading on benshouse.net). I suppose technically I should get myself a flickr account... 16 gennaio Oh dear...So it's 2am and I can't sleep. I've been lying in bed planning what I need to do before going to Reading on Thursday evening and wondering if everything I'm taking with me will work. Oh, and trying to work out how I get access to the interweb. Travelodge's website says "most" of their hotels have wireless and there is a BT Openzone at the M4 Eastbound service station - but none of that means it's BT Openzone (or even definite wireless access) whereI'm staying. That means I'll just have to sort it out when I'm down there, which is a shame cause I wanted to sort it out now...
The car is out of the garage, so at the very least it's back in my possession again, but it still needs the MOT sorting. Fingers crossed, it should be quick this time, therefore letting me have the car for the journey. So then I can take as much stuff as I like... So far the list of things to take includes -
If I find a screwdriver, I'll see what I can do about packing the kitchen sink :-) But in the meantime, what's bothering me at the moment is that if I can't sleep now, what chance do I have of getting any sleep before the thing has finished?
UPDATE: I'm not the only one who's excited. Darren Straight started the build up 2 weeks ago! 14 gennaio Er...There's some really good news and some slightly bad news.
The good news. Those going to the Vista Developer Launch Event in Reading get free copies of either Vista or Office (but not both). Don't belive me though, go and read Ian Moulster's blog to confirm it. This is fantastic news for me, because I'm registered for the event and plan to go down there on the Thursday evening.
So what's the slightly bad news? I might not be able to get there... My car failed it's MOT and is in the garage. The garage will look at fixing the problem on Monday, order necessary parts and then I'll still need to get it MOT'd again. All before Thursday evening. It should be possible, but I'm not counting on it. there are obviously a couple of things I can do if it isn't fixed - hire a car or take the train. I'd rather not do either (well, I'd love to take the train, but the travelodge is on the M4, nowhere near the train station). I'll just have to see what happens... 10 gennaio The iPhoneI'm taking comfort in the fact that Apple haven't actually released a new iPod. That's nice, it means mine's still the latest in technology. However...
Steve Jobs has announced the Apple iPhone. From the keynote which I followed live with Engadget earlier, it doesn't actually look like much of a phone, but then again neither do most Windows Mobile devices. It does however look like a fantastic PDA, an acronym Steve Jobs avoided like the plague (it's an "Internet Communicator"). If I were on the Windows Mobile team, I'd be crying because even the next generation of Windows Mobile to hit the market (Windows Mobile 6.0) doesn't look this good.
If I were on the Zune team, I'd be sh*tting my pants. The iPhone will be taking over from the iPod as a video playing device de to it's larger screen. The interface for the iPod stuff then kicks ass. And the iPhone has Wireless/Bluetooth and EDGE for connecting to the internet and other devices. As yet there's been no announcement on sharing music between iPhones, but this makes it unbelievably possible. A small software update from Apple and "boom".
It's only lucky that the iPhone is not out for another 11 months in the UK (June in America, Q4 for Europe). It will kick some serious mobile device ass and Microsoft had better get moving now in order to have something in the market better before it's too late (within a year of iPhone release). They've had the practice, it's time to get a move on. For now, my 2007 Christmas list has just been started with the word "iPhone". 05 gennaio The Wii.Oh yes. I've just spent some time tonight with the Nintendo Wii. You could call it a 'Wii-vening'. Or not. Whatever it was, it was Wii-ly fun.
Wii Sports - great. Rayman - brilliant. Whatever the random driving game was - quite good. All in all, a bargin at £179 brand new and if I had a big-ass TV I'd go out and buy one. Fun for adults, kids and adults who act like kids. Extremely sociable console because of how fun it is and everyone who played tonight can only think of how Nintendo might add to the fun (leg sensors? dance mat?).
To sum this up, if I had a choice between an XBox 360, a PS3 and a Wii, I've no idea whether I'd go for the 360 or the Wii. The Wii was brilliant, but the 360 will be getting Halo 3...
PS: sorry that the photos are so bad. I only had my camera phone on me. For a better idea of what the Wii is really like to play, compare this video of a couple of days ago, with this video of the wii (both about 500Kb). |
